The dramatic interplay of light and shadow combined with the ability to emphasize intricate details are just some of the charms of black and white photography. Ever since the advent of photography, it has been every photographer's dream to translate the numerous colours of life into a black and white masterpiece. The Masters shot in this medium for lack of choice. Yet even today, a number of photographers around the world are deliberately choosing to shoot in black and white. People generally admire black and white photography using adjectives like classy, timeless and elegant. That’s because some of the world's finest photography is in monochrome. The monochromatic work of legends like Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier Bresson and Raghu Rai is inspirational for photographers. The workshop begins with the understanding of monochromatic visualisation. As the workshop progresses, you will find yourself thinking in black and white. Important aspects like tone and contrast will be illustrated along with an easy-to-grasp explanation of how histograms work. Apart from the camera controls, the workshop will help you practice using various options of lighting direction and quality and understand how they affect the images. The session on darkroom work will come as a relief for those who steadfastly continue shooting on SLRs and even those who despite switching over to digital cameras are curious to understand the appeal attached with developing your own photos.
